Annie Escobar, Founder and CEO
By documenting the stories of activists, organizers, healers and changemakers in over 25 countries around the world, Annie has seen first hand the role that storytelling plays in building movements and catalyzing change. As a filmmaker, she’s created emotional, story driven videos for over 50 social movements and organizations. Annie is obsessed with creating and producing stories that change the way we see ourselves, each other and the world.
Annie is the author of The Starter Guide to Non-Profit Video Storytelling and has been a keynote speaker at TEDxNYU, Google, The Foundation Center, and NYU. Additionally, she has led workshops in Palestine, Uganda, Macedonia, Kazakhstan, Tunisia and the United States. She believes that if we shift our cultural stories – from narratives of inadequacy, separation and inevitability to narratives of wholeness, connection and power – that we truly can create a more just and loving world.
You can hear her TEDx talk about the power of personal stories to transform dominant narratives here.
Eghosa Asemota, Executive Assistant and Producer
Eghosa serves as the primary point person for contractors and clients and is tasked with guiding them through the video production process. She spearheads the logistics of each video production, manages day-to-day operations and administrative details such as the coordination of contracts, and creates new systems to maximize organizational efficiency.
Since joining Awake Storytelling in July 2015, she has been an integral part of our meaningful work and has seen firsthand that telling stories are powerful acts of resistance. In an effort to hear the voices of those who have been silenced, confront narratives that sustain injustice and build an honest conversation about what it means to be Black in America, she launched Define: BLACK with Annie Escobar in September 2015 and spearheads communications and distribution of its content. Since it’s launch, Define: BLACK has accumulated over two million views and has been featured in The Huffington Post, Upworthy, Abernathy, Latina Magazine, For Harriet, and a number of blogs.
